CUMULUS MEDIA DONATES FM STATION
TO MAINE PUBLIC BROADCASTING
MILWAUKEE, May 25, 1999 -- Cumulus Media Inc. (NASDAQ:CMLS), the nation's
third largest owner-and-operator of radio stations, today announced that
it has donated WHQO-FM, based in Skowhegan, Maine, to Maine Public Broadcasting.
WHQO-FM reaches a population of approximately 120,000 listeners throughout
the southern part of Somerset County and the northern part of Kennebec
County. This includes the communities of Skowhegan, Madison, Norridgewock,
Fairfield, Clinton, Winslow, Oakland and Waterville.
"One of the benefits of radio consolidation is that it creates opportunities
for signals which can offer strong niche programming," said Richard Weening,
Executive Chairman of Cumulus Media Inc. "We are pleased to be able
to assist Maine Public Broadcasting in carrying out its mission of serving
radio listeners across the State of Maine."
Cumulus already owns WTOS-FM and had agreed to acquire WHQO-FM as well
as WCTB-FM and WSKW-AM from Mountain Wireless, Inc. Cumulus will
transfer the rights to WHQO-FM to Maine Public Broadcasting under the agreement
announced today.
"We are grateful to Cumulus Media for its decision to donate WHQO-FM
to our organization," said Rob Gardiner, President of Maine Public Broadcasting.
"The strong signal of WHQO-FM will greatly expand our ability to fulfill
our mission: to serve the people of Maine with public radio programming."
"The donation of this station will enable Maine Public Broadcasting
to expand its service area and offer its outstanding programming to more
people in our state,” said Congressman John Baldacci (D). “Through
this donation, Maine residents in the Kennebec and Somerset county areas
will have improved access to the news, information and entertainment programs
presented on public radio."
"I congratulate Cumulus Media and Maine Public Broadcasting on today’s
announcement,” said Congressman Tom Allen (D). “The addition of WHQO-FM
will make Maine Public Radio’s truly outstanding programming available
to more households in central and western Maine.”
